Bio and Contact
I was born in Santiago de Chile in 1971. After Pinochet's coup d'etat, I started a nomad life through several countries in Latin America and Europe, until arriving in Nicaragua in 1979. There I grew up and received elementary and high school education. I was involved in all of the tasks of the revolution: adults' alphabetization, coffee cropping in war zones, rescues in hurricane seasons, construction of anti bombing refuges.
I pursued graduate studies in photography at the Gris Art Escola of Photography in Barcelona; studied architecture for one year, and watercolor painting, bout at Mexico's National Autonomous University; and attended the International Film School in Cuba, where I studied direction of photography.
In the last 15 years my work has been published in such magazines as: Time, Newsweek, Wired, Nouvel Observateur, Figaro, Geo, Altaïr, Gatopardo, Macropolis, Proceso, Cuartoscuro, Expansion. I have also been contributor for Sipa Press, Gamma and Corbis.
In 1996, I co-authored with writer Dauno Totoro, a book about the Zapatistas, which was published in Buenos Aires. In 2001, an updated version of the same book was published in Mexico. In 2006, Editorial Maipue (Buenos Aires), published a new book which I co-authored with historian Guillermo Almeyra, entitled "Zapatistas: A New World Under Construction", with a chronicle I wrote of a long journey through the rebel zone in 2005, which included a selection of my photos.
Through the years I have collaborated with different NGO, foundations and institutes such as: Global Health Partners; Disarm Education Fund, The Rockefeller Foundation and International Red Cross of Geneva. I have also made some advertising projects for Miller Light Beer, Naviera Magallanes, Megacable, Distrito Films and Mango Films.
Presently I am a Mexican citizen.
